UFC 88 play-by-play results

Sunday September 7 BY Martin Smith

Hello all and welcome to the play by play results from MMAPreview.com. Unfortunately, we’re not able to go live with this again due to a number of problems but we’re working on this for our new site - which should be ready in a matter of weeks.

Talking of the new site, we’re looking for MMA writers and of course, many of you will be aware that we are merging the WWEPreview.com site with the MMAPreview.com site. I’ve said it before, but the plans are really fantastic. Given time, the new site will be one of the main sources for MMA and wrestling news on the web. We’ve lined up some fantastic writers and we’re hoping to pull a few surprises also.

We’ll get under way wth our UFC coverage later tonight, but for now, I’ll just say how happy I am that boxer Amir Khan got knocked out tonight in 55 seconds. He went into the fight on the back of a nineteen win streak against unknown fighters and many of his fans called for a world title shot. I openly admitted he was a good boxer, but I called it flat saying that if he went up against world class opposition - he would get destroyed. Well, I am smug after tonight and I am happy to say that his chances of a world title shot are now virtually non-existant. It’s very rare when I wish for a fighter or boxer to lose, but Khan was a boxer who talked the talk and boasted about his record - which was against low name boxers. Yes Amir, beat world class boxers and run your mouth - but don’t beat low ranked boxers and tell the world your the best. That certainly isn’t cool. Unfortunately, Khan believed his hype and I’m very happy he was brought down to earth tonight.

Rant over.

One guy who can certainly talk the talk is Chuck Liddell and he’ll be in our main event against Rashad Evans. Other fights tonight include Matt Hamill taking on Rich Franklin, Nate Marquardt taking on Martin Kampmann, Matt Brown against Dong Hyun Kim and Dan Henderson against Rousimar Palhares. The prelims will be Thiago Tavares against Kurt Pellegrino, Roan Carneiro versus Ryo Chonan, Jason MacDonald against Jason Lambert and Mike Patt versus Tim Boestch. Of course, the Karo Parisyan/Yoshiyuki Yoshida was cancelled on Friday due to an injury to Parisyan.

For anyone that cares, I’ve gone for..

Boetsch to win by TKO in round two

MacDonald by judges decision

Kampmann by judges decision

Tavares by submission in round two

Kim by TKO in round three

Carneiro by judges decision

Henderson by TKO in round two

Franklin by judges decision

Liddell by TKO in round two.

Amir Khan admitted in his after fight interview that he is still a world beater. He’s good, but I don’t care what he says, he will never ever be world class in my eyes. I said it before tonight and I’ll say it again. Of course, this is irrelevant for MMA fans but I’ll put it in terms of MMA. It would be like Jason Day saying he’s the best light-heavyweight fighter in the world right now. Farcical isn’t it?

02:43 - Right folks here we go. The Pellegrino/Tavares fight is just concluding so I’ll start with my coverage. Apparently it’s controversial the end to the fight, so we’ll have to wait for the result. It’s been a pretty bland night so far and one that seems to have taken forever. Of course, four fights in two hours was always going to drag.

Tim Boetsch def. Michael Patt by TKO (referee’s stoppage due to strikes) at 2:03, R1

Jason MacDonald def. Jason Lambert by submission (rear naked choke) at 1:20, R2

Ryo Chonan def. Roan Carneiro by split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)

02:46 - Pellegrino takes the decision (29-27, 29-27, 29-28).

My record for tonight for those keeping count is 2-2. I take credit from that though. The Carneiro fight I was unlucky to lose and the last fight between Tavares and Pellegrino was controversial - Pellegrino is alleged to have tapped in round two but the referee didn’t see it.

Don’t forget you can get in touch anytime over the next few days martin@mmapreview.com. We’ve got some great stuff coming up over the next few weeks including the new site. The site looks like it’s going to be great. There was no “Shoot Series” last week as I was ill and of course, it is absent this week due to the PPV.

Anyone who missed the news - Thiago Silva has been forced to pull out of his fight with Lyoto Machida at UFC 89. Apparently the UFC is looking for fighters outside of their already stacked light-heavyweight division to step up and face Machida. Wow, you would seriously think they had a lack of talent in that division. It’ll be interesting to see who they bring in.

02:54 - Just for the record, I’ve said the last two times I’ve done this that I don’t expect the night to last long. They’ve gone well past 6am, however - I don’t expect this one to go long! The Matt Brown, Dan Henderson and main event fights will be over relatively quick. That’s good because I’ll get to see the Boestch knockout. If I’m still sat here at 5.45am, I’ll either have one heck of a boring night or a great night of MMA. To be fair, the last PPV was absolutely beautiful and I didn’t even notice the time.

02:59 - Here we go. This should be a cracker. Usual roman music - why don’t the UFC change this I wonder?

The feed is going. I dreaded this because of the awful weather both States side and over here. It’s back for now but bare with us. If this goes off, I’ll be pissed.

Mike Goldberg is doing his usual bit and he’s building up the Liddell fight. The usual poll on ufc.com is up. I might head over there if we get a quick knockout or submission but for now it’s all business. They hype up the other fights.

Looks like we are going to go straight to the Matt Brown fight against Dong Hyun Kim.

It really is going to have to be something for Matt Brown to win this.

03:08 - Matt Brown versus Dong Hyun Kim

Interesting fact as Brown comes out - he has only ever gone the distance once in his career.

Feed is going again. I really hope that is the last time I say that. Dong Hyun Kim is coming out now - judo black belt.

Kim is getting booed during the introductions and he cups his ear for good measure. Wow, lots of boo’s.

03:38 - Apparently it was a controversial one that aswell. The crowd booed the result and Joe Rogan had it a Matt Brown win also. I’ve scanned a number of websites and they gave it Brown too. I thought the last two minutes of the final round gave in Kim.

03:39 - Nate Marquardt versus Martin Kampmann is up now.

I’m thinking this might be fight of the night. I’ve given this Kampmann by decision.

Referee is Mario Yamaski, he did the last fight also.

Round One: Both men try a kick. Great kick by Marquardt and Kampmann just escapes after it connected. Elbow by Nate that rocks Kampmann and some big punches by Nate. Combo’s by Nate. Kampmann slumps to the floor. It is all over. Wow.

I wonder if Anderson Silva was watching that?

03:50 Liddell is winning the text voting with 78%

03:52 Dan Henderson against Rousimar Palhares

I’m surprised they didn’t show a prelim then. Maybe Dana thinks, like me, that this fight will be over quick and then he will show us a prelim?

Henderson needs to follow Marquardt’s lead. Speaking of those two, any chance we’ll see them fight in the future?

Palhares is out. I’ve always wondered why fighters listen to their ipod when there theme music is playing.

Rogan makes a good point - Henderson has lost his last two fights in the UFC. He lost to Anderson Silva and Quinton Jackson.

I wonder if Anderson Silva is watching this one?

Palhares has an MMA record of 17-1. Don’t let that fool you. Henderson will destroy him. I’m telling you.

Round One: Herb Dean is referee. Henderson looks bigger than RP. Stand off and not much happening. Henderson hit him hard and RP is rocked. RP goes for the submission but they both step up. The result: Two judges scored it 30-27 and one scored it 29-28. Winner by unanimous decision is Dan Henderson.

04:20: Rogan is with Randy Couture. They talk Brock.

04:22: Now they’re plugging Men’s Fitness.

04:24: Prelim time. Tim Boetsch versus Michael Patt. I’m not going to go through this. If you read the earlier results, you’ll know who wins. I’ll let you know if anything happens.

Great right hand by Boetsch to win this fight.

04:37: Here we go, Rich Franklin against Matt Hamill

Does anyone else think Rich Franklin looks like Tim Credeur?

Both fighters are out now and I think this could be interesting. Don’t forget Rich Franklin has moved up to light-heavyweight for this fight. Mario Yamaski is ref.

Round One: Both stand up and attempt kicks. Nothing much happening. Good right hand by Hamill. Superman punch by Hamill didn’t connect. Great right uppercut by Hamill. Not much happening at all. More of a stand off than anything. There’s a good opportunity for someone to win the round here.Attempted uppercut. Franklin is cut under his left eye. Hamill gets a takedown and passes guard. Rich Franklin wins by TKO in 39 seconds of Round Three

05:05: Now it’s time for our main event

Rashad Evans versus Chuck Liddell

72% think Chuck Liddell on the text and poll voting on UFC.com

05:10 - Rashad Evans is making his way to the octagon.

I can’t say I’m looking past anything other than a Liddell win here. Here he comes now by the way. He looks rather cool and pretty focused.

I’m still going for Liddell to win by TKO in round two and the referee is Herb Dean. The crowd is booing Evans widely. It looks like Liddell has the support of the fans.

Round One: They stand off. Evans is on the backfoot already. Nothing happened yet and we’re a minute in. Great right hand by Evans over the top. Liddell delivers a right hand himself that rocks Evans. Body kicks by Evans. Liddell tries a huge right fist but misses. Evans is moving away quickly when Liddell follows through with a punch. What a boring main event so far. The eyes are getting heavy. Great hit by Liddell.

MMAPreview.com scores the round 10-9 to Liddell

Round Two: Here we go again. Rashad is defending Liddell’s shots nicely. Right hand by Liddell. Left/right combo by Evans. Good left hook by Evans. Uppercut by Liddell is countered by a knockout by Rashad Evans! RASHAD EVANS HAS KNOCKED OUT CHUCK LIDDELL. Liddell is out cold. Wow. What a hit. That fight was going nowhere than wham. Liddell threw the uppercut at the same time Evans threw the haymaker. That is one of the knockouts of the year right there. Unbelievable. The force of that punch was surreal. The question is, is that the end of Chuck Liddell? It took him about two minutes to come round.

Evans said afterwards. “I wanted to go at him with his own game”

“Hopefully it puts me right up there, I’m just enjoying the ride”

Rashad Evans wins by TKO in the second round.

Sorry folks, there was so much happening that I didn’t see the time. Everything was going crazy right there. There’s a lot of stuff happening right now. Evans is posing and stuff.

The arena emptied quick.

What I do know for certain is that the UFC are showing the Jason Lambert versus Jason MacDonald prelim fight now. You can check the results of that near the top. I’m sure you guys won’t mind me going to bed now. It’s just gone half 5 and I’m shattered. E-mail me martin@mmapreview.com. Thanks guys - feel free to send me feedback!
